Just like on Friday, EHC Königsbrunn lost their home game against TEV Miesbach 2-3 in overtime. After a convincing first period, the Königsbrunn team squandered their chances and gave away two points to the more efficient visitors.
The visitors arrived with three lines, while Königsbrunn welcomed back Hayden Trupp and Peter Brückner to their roster. However, Königsbrunn still had to do without David Kaiser, Tobias Baader, Stefan Vajs, and Joshua Appler. Benni Beck started in goal for Königsbrunn, with Robin Rieger from the second team on standby as the backup.
EHC started the second period well and continued to apply pressure. However, just as in the first period, the puck wouldn’t go in. In the 25th minute, the Brunnenstadt team had a good opportunity to make it 2-0. Just a minute later, Stefan Rodrigues danced through the offensive zone but was denied by goalie Timo Ewert. Miesbach tightened up defensively and created some scoring chances, but EHC still had the better opportunities. In the 29th minute, Marco Sternheimer hit the post; the puck simply wouldn’t go in. Luca Kinzel even had a good chance while shorthanded in the 34th minute, but it came to nothing. Miesbach finally got on the scoreboard in the 37th minute, scoring on the power play to tie the game at 1-1. The game was now wide open again.
Königsbrunn got off to a better start in the final period, and in the 46th minute, the team from the town of Königsbrunn fired several shots on goal. One of these found the back of the net, and thanks to Luca Szegedin’s goal, EHC Königsbrunn was back in the lead at 2-1. Three minutes later, Königsbrunn had another power play opportunity, but their efforts went unrewarded. Both teams had their chances, and in the 55th minute, Königsbrunn had a three-on-two break chance to seal the victory, but they failed to capitalize. Miesbach proved more clinical, and in the 57th minute, the visitors tied the game at 2-2. The goal clearly affected Königsbrunn, who were now completely rattled, but managed to hold on until the end of the period, forcing overtime and securing at least a point.
Overtime was played three-on-three for a maximum of five minutes. In the 64th minute, Miesbach capitalized on a Königsbrunn mistake and scored on sudden death to make it 2-3, with the extra point going to TEV.
EHC Königsbrunn held all the cards until three minutes before the end of the game, but then conceded the equalizer and ultimately had to be happy with a point gained. EHC coach Bobby Linke was visibly annoyed after the match and didn’t mince words:
“We started the game with a lot of momentum and were feeling good after the Klostersee game. We were able to create some good scoring opportunities. Unfortunately, we didn’t capitalize enough on our power plays and other chances. We should have taken a clear lead. In the second period, we warned against letting the opponent back into the game through our own carelessness. We continued to leave too many opportunities on the table, and that came back to haunt us. Miesbach equalized and got back into the game. Everything was wide open again in the final period, and I had hoped that would give the team a boost. Unfortunately, we lacked the mental edge; we were too unfocused in our own zone and gave Miesbach gifts. They were in the right place at the right time in front of the net and had their sticks on the ice. We were standing still, not looking for our opponents, and were too sluggish in our actions. Just like on Friday, we failed to hold onto the lead. We always try to create our goals in spectacular fashion, but we can’t execute the simple things on the ice, and…” We’re making overly complicated decisions. Next week we have two brutally tough games against the top two teams, so we need to perform differently, make more of our chances and defend better as a team.”
